Printer or no printer – that’s the question

There are some evergreens. And one of them is me mulling over the question on whether I should get a printer or not. I blame Ove for that.

Con: my print volume won’t be big, maybe 1-2 prints per week. So it doesn’t pay off, and I might even run into problems with clogging nozzles. And it will eat up more time. And it’s expensive. And big.

Pro: I want to have one!

Hm. The “Pro” arguments seem to clearly outweigh the “Con” arguments.

One of the more embarrassing things that happened to me last week: I was taking a couple of group photos during a workshop, using the FX100. And then one of my colleagues took over, so that we also had some photos with me in it. And then she came over, quietly pointing out that all my shots were completely useless. Completely out of focus, because I accidentally configured the camera to manual focus. And with such a quiet rangefinder I actually didn’t realize what was happening.

Oh yes, beginners mistake. Guess I need to use the Fuji more.

You know, Thomas, you could save me a bit of money by reviewing the FX 100. After all, I am reviewing the Nikon 1 – V1. :)

Oh, and BTW, yes the “Pro” will outweigh any “Con” that you could possibly come up with, save, perhaps, lack of funds. :)

No, it wont clog if you use it once a week, I’m not using it more often so I certainly hope that’s true. :)

Thomas, I am in the same dilemma, and up to now have decided against it. I have a lab that gives out color profiles and most of the times delivers over night for prices cheaper than ink/print, so the only thing I do miss is that great variety of papers available on the market.

But then, this is Pandora’s box! I don’t want to spend my spare time to make test prints, instead I am still in the phase where I feel I have to concentrate on the pictures.

That said, I truly enjoy prints – no comparison with a screen view – and get roughly 20 prints/month of the images I am most interested in.

May I ask what you do with the prints? I guess you’re not living in a castle, so your walls might be covered by now… ;)

For some strange reason the price of prints is absolutely ridiculous in Sweden (compared to Germany). Roughly 2-4 times higher. So it pays off to have it printed in Germany, even with the increased postage. Problem is that it takes roughly 2 weeks – no instant satisfaction there. Which, if I’m honest, is one of the main reasons for being tempted.
